Assuming you mean the new iPhone 4 and the still current iPhone 3GS, there are a substantial number of differences between these models in design, display, capability, performance, battery life and more.

For most users, the iPhone 4 is "worth it," but an independent comparison can be useful for you to decide whether the lower upfront price of the iPhone 3GS is more important than the other differences:
http://www.everyipod.com/iphone-faq/differences-between-iphone-4-iphone-3gs.html

Also, keep in mind that most of the cost is not upfront, but is tied to the plan. This can be worthwhile to provide a better idea of the total cost of ownership:

Hope this helps!

first off no, the iphone 4 doesn't cost triple any of the other iphones, it is $ 200, all the previous generations of iphones had a starting price of $ 200 as well, now that the 3GS is out dated, it is being sold for $ 99 but it was $ 200 when it first came out.

Lets compare the iPhone 3GS to the iPhone 4:
they both have multitasking
neither have flash
both work with 3G network
both take pictures and videos
the iPhone 4 have face time which means there is a camera on the front so you can video chat with other people but only if they have the iPhone 4
the iPhone 4 is a 4G phone so it is faster, also the 4G network is faster than 3G, but unless you live in an area that has 4G (East coast, California), then it doesn't matter
The iPhone 4G takes longer to ship, at least 5 days to ship, you can rush ship the 3GS
The cases/screen protectors/bumpers for the iPhone 4 are harder to find and more expensive
the iPhone 4 is scratch resistent
The iPhone 4 takes HD videos and pictures (could substitute your digital camera if you only use it for basic photography)
The iPhone 4 is newer, so it won't go obsolete as soon
If you break your iPhone 4 and go to the Apple store they will be more likely to fix it because it's the newest version and if you have a 3GS they'll just tell you to buy the new phone (this happened to me)
you will pay at least $ 15+ a month just for a data plan for either

things I wouldn't consider:
the iphone 4 antenna problem isn't really a problem, I tried really hard to get it to drop a call and it didn't, plus you're going to put it in a case most likely

the iphone 4 is new and shiny and cool, it's only $ 100 more and think, it could take place of buying a new ipod, digital camera, and phone

also, to people who tell you to get a totally different smartphone, the iphone has a way better warranty, for free, they'll replace it if you break it, their customer service is much better so you won't wait forever for it to be fixed, and the iphone takes the place of an ipod as well and syncs easily with your itunes library. Plus it's super easy to use, my mom couldn't understand her blackberry or her palm but when we got her an iphone she got it right away, so for someone who's not too tech savvy, Apple products are the way to go

If you reset your iPhone (if it is unlocked) to the factory setting you will loose all your applications. Simple as that. However, if you did buy the applications from the Apple App store I'm sure you will have them in your download history. I would suggest to check out the Apple Support Website and see if you can find the answer.

Visit www.phonedevil.com to purchase a legally unlocked version (i.e. a version that has NEVER been locked).
My brother purchased my Xmas gift from them, check out this link for their customer reviews:

This link is also very useful for explaining the difference between a software unlocked iPhone 3G and a factory (legally) unlocked iPhone 3G:

You can only software unlock an iPhone with yellowsn0w which is on firmware 2.2 or lower. If you want to upgrade to 2.2.1 you can upgrade using a custom firmware. If you have an iPhone on 2.2.1 already you cannot unlock it currently as the 2.2.1 update altered the baseband which currently cannot be exploited.

blog.iphone-dev.org will give you more details.
